A handmade traditional Ethiopian clay cooking pot — the Shekla Dist (የሸክላ ድስት) — used across Ethiopia and Eritrea to cook and serve wot, shiro, doro and tibs. Made from the same natural black clay as the Jebena, with a fitted lid and two side handles.
The Shekla Dist is the pot Ethiopian food is meant to be cooked in. Clay heats slowly and holds that heat, so stews simmer evenly, berbere and spices open up properly, and the wot keeps its depth of flavour instead of catching on the base the way it does in thin metal. The fitted lid traps steam and aroma; the two handles let the pot go straight from the stove to the middle of the table, still bubbling.
It is fired from the same natural clay used for the traditional Ethiopian Jebena — unglazed, untreated, and shaped by hand, so every piece carries small natural variations.
Now available on Mekazon, so Ethiopian and Eritrean families in the UAE can cook the way it is cooked back home.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a Shekla Dist?
It is the traditional Ethiopian clay cooking pot used to make and serve stews such as wot, shiro and doro. Shekla means clay; dist means pot.
Is it the same clay as the Jebena?
Yes. It is fired from the same natural black clay used for the traditional Ethiopian coffee pot.
Can I use it on a gas or electric stove?
Yes, on low to medium heat. A heat diffuser is recommended, especially on electric or induction-style hobs.
Does it come with a lid?
Yes — the pot and its lid are supplied together.
Will every pot look exactly the same?
No. Because each one is handmade, shape, size and finish vary slightly.
Do I need to season it first?
Yes. Rub the inside with oil and warm it gently before the first cook — this is normal for unglazed clay.
