Addis Tea Gold Label (አዲስ ሻይ) — Ethiopian loose-leaf black tea, 100 g

The green-and-white pack from the kiosk back home. This is the tea Ethiopia drinks all day — strong, dark and smooth, brewed loose in the pot with sugar, and often a leaf of tena adam or a clove dropped in. Dubai supermarket tea bags taste thin next to it.

This is loose leaf, not tea bags. One 100 g pack makes 40–50 cups. If you drink it every morning, or you don't drink coffee at all, take two.

How to brew it

• One teaspoon per cup into boiling water, 3–4 minutes, then strain
• Sugar in the pot the Ethiopian way, or plain
• Add tena adam, a clove or a piece of cinnamon for spiced shai
• Works with milk too, chai-style
